I was born in New York in the 70´s, and raised in London in the 80´s with my two siblings, by my Norwegian parents. Looking back I can see how important this mix has been in defining my esthetic and the way I look at interior design.
My mother is an artist - and has always encouraged us to find the beauty in nature as well as to love colour. My father, a business man but also an avid collector of antiques has taught me to appreciate the beauty in old and unique pieces that help to define who we are and our history.
I have a MA in Management with honours from St Andrews University, and worked as a management consultant for some years , before landing a job as an assistant to an interior designer in Oslo.
Everything was learning by doing in the early years, and actually what I really love about interior design is that there is always something new to be learnt if you are open for it ! There are so many fields that have to come together in order to make a home, that its impossible to know everything - from plumbing, painting, electrical work, plastering, hardware, furniture styles, making, fabric…. the list really is endless.
Working with so many people with different skills is incredibly rewarding and fun - especially when the team is really solution oriented and comes together to bring out the best in a project.
In 2013 I started Divine Design Oslo with two partners, and had almost 10 years there working on both private and commercial projects with inspirational and great colleagues. Our projects were featured in many magazines in Norway and abroad, as well as publications such as Andrew Martin Interior Design Review.
In 2023, I established my own firm, Cornelia Thrane-Steen Interiør Design, setting up my new office in an outbuilding of our house with had previously been a cowshed and Henhouse.
